Vienna's Votivkirche, one of the city's most significant Catholic landmarks and a defining example of neo-Gothic architecture, became the setting for Light of Creation, an immersive light and sound experience that retells the story of Genesis in six acts through light, projection and sound.
Produced by opera singer Max Emanuel Cenčić, with music by EMMY Award-winning composer Adam Lukas and video by MP-STUDIO under director Marin Petkov, the approximately 30-minute show was designed by lighting designer Georg Fuchs around the architectural character and technical constraints of the church itself.
The scale, proportions and materials of the Votivkirche presented a significant challenge for the lighting and projection design, requiring the installation to integrate respectfully into the historic structure. The brief called for compact fixtures, silent operation, high reliability in continuous use and a quality of light capable of enhancing the space without overpowering it.
Within these constraints, Fuchs chose the PROLIGHTS Astra Hybrid330 LED hybrid moving heads as part of the rig, positioned at the centre of the altar area, the dramatic and narrative core of the show, to provide differentiated illumination of the altar and work in continuity with the large-format projections extending across the entire church.
The fixture's ability to create striking accents, define the vertical space and emphasise architectural details, combined with its strong performance even without haze, was central to the choice. The selection followed a series of comparative tests conducted by Fuchs together with Max Emanuel Cenčić, where fixtures were evaluated in terms of light quality, flexibility, physical footprint and visual integration into the church environment. The process was supported by Lightpower, who supplied the fixtures for the production.
"The Astra Hybrid330 moving lights deliver a clear beam even without haze," Fuchs explained. "In spot mode, I use them to highlight frescoes on the church ceiling or create subtle textures in the space during the entrance. The fixtures thus create a harmonious atmosphere even before the actual show begins." Its quiet operation also made it well suited to the acoustic requirements of the Votivkirche.
Within the demanding setting of a sacred historical landmark, the PROLIGHTS Astra Hybrid330 provided the flexibility, precision and discretion that Light of Creation required, meeting the brief while remaining fully respectful of the architecture it was designed to serve.
